YOUTH(청춘)

Youth is not a time of life; it is a state of mind; it is not a matter of rosy cheeks, red lips and supple knees; it is a matter of the will, a quality of the imagination, a vigor of the emotions; it is the freshness of the deep springs of life.


청춘이란 인생의 어떤 한 시기가 아니라 마음의 상태를 말한다. 장밋빛 볼, 붉은 입술, 유연한 무릎을 뜻하는 것이 아니고 뛰어난 상상력과 활기찬 감정, 그리고 의지에 관한 문제이며, 인생의 깊은 샘에서 솟아나는 신선함을 가리키는 말이다.
 

 
Youth means a temperamental predominance of courage over timidity of the appetite, for adventure over the love of ease. This often exists in a man of sixty more than a boy of twenty.


청춘이란 욕심에 얽매인 소심함을 극복하는 강력한 용기와, 안이함에의 집착을 뛰어넘는 모험심을 뜻하는 것이니, 때로는 스무 살의 청년보다 예순 살의 노인이 더 청춘일 수 있다.   (계속)

Nobody grows old merely by a number of years. We grow old by deserting our ideals. Years may wrinkle the skin, but to give up enthusiasm wrinkles the soul. Worry, fear, self-distrust bows the heart and turns the spirit back to dust.
 

우리는 누구나 세월만으로 늙어가지는 않고 이상을 잃어버릴 때 비로소 늙어가나니 세월은 살결에 주름을 만들지만 열정을 상실할 때 영혼은 주름지기 시작하고
근심과 두려움, 자신감의 상실이 마음속에 깃들면 정신을 타락시킬 것이다
 


Whether sixty or sixteen, there is in every human being's heart the lure of wonder, the unfailing child-like appetite of what's next, and the joy of the game of living. In the center of your heart and my heart there is a wireless station; so long as it receives messages of beauty, hope, cheer, courage and power from men and from the infinite, so long are you young.


그대가 예순살이든 열여섯살이든 모든 인간의 가슴속에는 경이로움에의 동경과 아이처럼 왕성한 미래에의 탐구심과 삶의 도전에 대한 즐거움이 있는 법이다.  그대의 가슴, 나의 가슴 한 가운데에는 이심전심의 무선국이 있으니, 인간과 무한한 모든 것으로부터 오는 아름다움과 희망과 환호와 용기와 힘의 메시지를 받아들이는 한 그대는 오래도록 젊어있는 것이다.

 

When the aerials are down, and your spirit is covered with snows of cynicism and the ice of pessimism, then you are grown old, even at twenty, but as long as your aerials are up, to catch the waves of optimism, there is hope you may die young at eighty.


그대가 열정을 잃고, 그대의 정신이 냉소주의의 눈과 비관주의의 얼음으로 덮인다면 그때는 비록 스무 살이라도 늙은 것이나 다름없을 것이다
하지만, 그대가 안테나를 높이 세우고 낙관주의의 파도를 잡고 있는 한 그대는 여든 살에도 청춘의 이름으로 죽을 수 있을 것이다
